Santa Fe and Taos New Mexico

We have had a very nice time in Santa Fe and have already decided that we need to return to finish the touring. The city is very small for a capital city (about 75 thousand), but it has all the amenities that we would be looking for in a place to live. We are told the weather is great year round and the seasons are all represented. It is very dry however, since they only get about 15 inches of rain each year. We are surrounded by mountains and the views are spectacular.

We walked the downtown area that has more shops than the state of Delaware; and we ate great Mexican food more than once. Yesterday we took a day trip north of Sante Fe to the town of Taos, NM. The ride was through the mountains and very beautiful. We stopped at an old mission church (Santuario De Chimayo) which is a national historic landmark. It is billed as the Lourdes of America. It is a very interesting place where miracles are said to have taken place, and the soil in one corner of the church is said to have healing powers. Whether you believe or not it is a place to meditate and pray. I believe the Mission gets more than 300 thousand visitors each year.

Taos was a mini Santa Fe, but we really didn't have the opportunity to see the Pueblo dwellings nearby or other attractions in the area. We did go out to what is called the gorge bridge. Toas is on a plateau and about ten minutes to the west of town the Rio Grande river goes through. In this area it has carved a gorge out of the plateau that drops 650 feet straight down. The bridge crosses the gorge and they allow people to walk out on the bridge and take a look straight down. It is quite impressive. Eileen's fear of heights only allowed her to get about thirty feet into the bridge before she retreated to solid ground.

One of the other day trips from Santa Fe is to Los Alamos and the Indian dwellings to the northwest. We just didn't have the steam today to make another 150 mile drive into the mountains so we are saving that for a future trip. This is a great area, the people are very friendly, and the town has all that you would need for retirement. We will definitely be back.

Please email any comments you may have on the blogg. The pictures make it hard to do because of the WiFi speeds but I want everyone to see some of the places we have been. It's hard to select what to post.
