From Gallup we headed to Bayfield Colorado a town about 20 miles west of Durango. The campground here was really nice. We had a pull through site right on a pond. The pond was stocked with trout so I had my late afternoon activities filled up. I only caught a couple and it was catch and release but still fun. The campground had water flowing through it in a few places and was quiet and very nice. We even had a nice six point mule deer go by one morning. After a scramble for the camera I only got a picture of his business end. Nice deer in velvet.
We got the layout of Durango the second day we were there and did a little shopping. The big tourist event here is to ride the Durango - Silverton narrow gauge railroad. It is a beautiful ride that goes from about 6900 feet in Durango to almost 10,000 feet in Silverton. We didn't book soon enough so we ended up taking the bus up to Silverton and the train back to Durango. It turned out that this was a better way of doing the ride because you get a different perspective from the road up than you get from the valley. The ride up took about an hour and a half and the train ride back took about tree and a half. It was a wonderful day. We had great folks on the bus and the train and really had a nice time both ways. In Silverton we had a great lunch at a cowboy place called Handlebars Food and Saloon. (Good Food). The shopping was really nice for the jewelry shoppers among us and in spite of a persistent rain we were able to get to many shops. This was a great day.
When we returned to Durango we walked from the train station to The Mahogany Grill which is probably the nicest restaurant in the town. We had a great meal and I finally got my elk steak. I had had a buffalo burger for lunch so this was my game day and it was delicious.
We had a great couple of days in Durango and really relaxed in a very pretty campground. We headed to Page Az. on Friday 7/1 with a stop in Four Corners. I will include the pictures of Four Corners in this post.
The weather was also cooler in Durango. Probably due to the altitude.
